What is inequality?


Many years ago during my studies in Italy in the 1970s I heard a song by a popular Italian singer-musician Luigi Tenco titled "Cara Maestra" ("Dear Teacher"), which I very recently learnt was censored at the time of its first release in 1962 by the Italian media censorship. The text of the song was as follows: Dear Teacher, you used to tell us, we are all equal, but when a peon entered the class, you would allow us to remain seated, but if the director of the school entered the class, you expected us to stand up.
